Cepheids as Distance Indicators: Some Current Problems
نویسنده
چکیده
A general review is given of the calibration of the Cepheid distance scale, with particular reference to its use in the determination of H0. Emphasis is placed on the advantage of using a galactic calibration of the Cepheid scale, rather than relying on an adopted distance to the LMC. It is then possible to use LMC data to test for possible metallicity effects on this scale.

We review the use of Cepheids as distance indicators with particular emphasis on the methods which have been applied to HST observations of Cepheids. The calibration of the periodluminosity relations is examined in detail and we identify possible problems with the existing calibrations. New V and I-band period luminosity relations are presented based on a sample of 53 Cepheids in the LMC with p...
متن کامل0 Local Distance Indicators
A summary is given of the calibration of the Cepheid scale required in the derivation of distances from observations at V and I, as in the HST work on extragalactic Cepheids. There is some evidence that a small metallicity correction may be necessary in deriving distances in this way. The evidence for this comes both from observations of Cepheids of different metallicities and from a comparison...
متن کاملOn the second overtone stability among SMC Cepheids
We present a new set of Cepheid, full amplitude, nonlinear, convective models which are pulsationally unstable in the second overtone (SO). Hydrodynamical models were constructed by adopting a chemical composition typical for Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and stellar masses ranging from 3.25 to 4 M⊙. Predicted φ21 Fourier parameters agree, within current uncertainties, with empir...
متن کاملCurrent Uncertainties in the Use of Cepheids as Distance Indicators
The methods of calibrating the luminosities of galactic Cepheids and determining Cepheid reddenings are considered in some detail. Together with work on NGC4258 this suggests that the calibration presented is valid to about 0.1mag (s.e.) at least for Cepheids with near solar abundances. Metallicity effects are considered, partly through the use of non-Cepheid moduli of the LMC. To reduce the un...
متن کاملUsing Ultra Long Period Cepheids to Extend the Cosmic Distance Ladder to 100 Mpc and Beyond
We examine the properties of 18 long period (80 − 210 days) and very luminous (median absolute magnitude of MI = −7.86 and MV = −6.97) Cepheids to see if they can serve as an useful distance indicator. We find that these Ultra Long Period (ULP) Cepheids have a relatively shallow Period-Luminosity (PL) relation, so in fact they are more “standard candle”-like than classical Cepheids. In the redd...
